Travelling to Brazil from Europe: what changes when roam-like-at-home stops
Your EU plan follows you around Europe and stops at the border. What that costs on a trip to Brazil, and the three ways around it.
If you live in the EU, your phone plan follows you to Spain or Italy at no extra cost. That rule stops at the edge of the union, and Brazil is a long way past it.
Why roaming outside the EU is different
Inside the EU, roam like at home means your domestic allowance works across the bloc without a surcharge. Brazil is not covered by that rule. Outside the European Economic Area every operator applies its own table, usually charged per day of use or per MB — which on a two or three week trip turns into a number that is hard to justify.
Check your own operator’s out-of-EU rate before assuming. They vary more than people expect, and a few include a small out-of-bundle allowance that is enough for maps and messaging.
The options, honestly
Your operator’s roaming pack. Simple to switch on, expensive per day. Makes sense for a two or three day trip.
A Brazilian prepaid SIM. Cheapest per GB and the most work: it needs a CPF (the Brazilian tax number), a trip to a shop, and you end up managing two SIMs. Worth it if you are staying more than a month.
A travel eSIM. Install before you fly, activate on landing, and your home number keeps working for the texts your bank sends. This is the middle ground for one to four weeks — which is the typical length of a trip to see family.
The detail almost everyone forgets
Bank SMS. If you keep an account in Europe, confirmation codes arrive by text to your European number. A data eSIM handles this well: the home SIM stays active for texts and calls, and the eSIM carries the internet.
Swapping the home SIM for a Brazilian one is exactly what leaves you unable to receive the code at the moment you try to pay for something.
Before you fly
- Check the phone supports eSIM (how).
- Install the eSIM at home, on wifi. It stays dormant until you arrive.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM. This is the step that avoids the unpleasant bill.
- On landing, turn on data for the eSIM and leave roaming on for it.
How many days to buy
Travel plans are priced by duration, and the clock starts on activation, not on purchase. For a trip to Brazil the usual shapes are:
- Long weekend: 7 days
- A normal holiday: 15 days
- A month with family: 30 days
Buying the actual length of the trip is almost always better than buying short and topping up later.
