Is Airalo worth it? An honest look at a competitor
What Airalo does well, where it costs more than it should, and when it is the right choice even though it is not ours.
We compete with Airalo, so read this with the appropriate suspicion. It is still worth writing, because the honest answer is not “no”.
What Airalo does well
Coverage. Over 200 destinations. If you are going somewhere unusual, the odds are they serve it and we do not.
Reliability. Millions of installs. The product works, the app works, support answers.
Scale. They have been at this since 2019 and they are the reason “travel eSIM” became a category at all. A good deal of what the market knows how to do, they established.
If you want the safest option and do not mind paying for it, that is a defensible choice.
Where they charge a lot
Airalo’s pricing is, on most routes, the ceiling of the market. You are paying for coverage and for the brand — a legitimate trade, as long as you know you are making it.
One case is worth naming: Brazil. In July 2026 the 30-day Brazil plan was US$85, against US$69 for the United States. That is 23% more for a destination that is not 23% harder to serve.
The actual criticism
It is not the price. It is where the number lives.
Airalo’s plans are sold as unlimited. The fair-use policy — 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps — is documented, but on a resources page, outside the purchase flow. You decide on the plan screen; the information is somewhere else.
It is not a lie. It is a choice about where to put the truth, and it is the same choice nearly the whole market makes.
It is the one thing we are objectively different on. We write the daily cap and the reduced speed on the plan card, before payment. And where a supplier does not disclose the policy for a destination, we write that too, in those words.
When to choose Airalo over us
Without irony:
- A destination we do not cover. We are smaller. If you are going to Mongolia, go with Airalo.
- You want an app with an order history. Ours does not exist yet — the order page does the job, but it is less.
- You buy without thinking twice. If convenience is worth more than 20% to you, that is a rational decision.
When to choose us
- You want to know the daily limit before you pay.
- Your destination is on our list.
- You would rather use a site that says “you probably do not need to buy anything” when that is true — which is what we do on routes inside the EU.
The honest summary
Airalo is a good product at a high price with a transparency decision we disagree with. It is not a scam, and anyone writing that it is has something to sell you.
The useful question is not “is Airalo trustworthy” — it is. It is whether you want to pay the top of the market for a plan whose daily limit you only find by going looking for it.
